On 3 October 2009 the men at COP Keating were attacked by 300 plus Taliban in Nuristan Afghanistan. This COP (combat outpost) was scheduled to be closed on 6 October due to its location and effectiveness (lack of) in the region. The COP was situated in a deep valley. High ground all around which gave the Taliban an advantage.
8 Soldiers killed in action. 20 WIA. 2x Medals of Honor and many other valorous awards received. The Battle last 13 hours. Taliban breached the COP IN 48 minutes.
One particular soldier served in my unit thr year prior in Baghda. SGT Joshua Hardt. Full of energy and full of life. Always had a smile and joke ready for anyone. He was the last soldier found after the cop had been cleared.
